The Detroit Tigers came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the
anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 5 to
4.

Detroit had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs
using 3 hits. Matt Stairs led off and started the attack as he hit a single.
David Eckstein stepped up next and he delivered a single. David Dellucci
then stroked a one-base hit. Dellucci took second on the throw. Gerald
Laird dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. Curtis Granderson
stepped into the box and drew a walk to load the bases. Carlos Guillen got
his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Brad Hawpe
next to the plate and he drew a walk. Miguel Cabrera struck out, unable to
help the rally. The Kansas City offense proved no trouble in the bottom of
the 9th.

Nate Robertson(4-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and
allowing 1 run. Todd Jones earned his 8th save. The losing pitcher was Brad
Ziegler(0-1) in relief.

After the game, it took a long while before Eddie Fudge emerged from his
office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as
I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more
light-hearted over in the Detroit locker room.'
