Shortstop Erick Aybar had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Ryan Dempster had a strong
outing at Busch Stadium where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington
Nationals by the score of 4 to 2.

St. Louis scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning when they had 4 base
hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Dempster(8-9) and St.
Louis. That was all the run support Dempster required. Washington had a
chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Dempster was helped out by Francisco Cordero who recorded his 10th save. Jeff
Niemann(1-10) absorbed the loss. Although losing the contest, he whiffed 10
batters in 6 innings.

Mike Johnson was in a sour mood after the game. 'Even you guys up in the press
box know why we lost this game. We made too many mistakes.'

Ricky Nolasco went 8 strong innings as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Tampa
Bay Rays by a score of 3 to 0 at Tropicana Field.

Nolasco(12-0) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
Tampa Bay batters. He allowed only 2 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. Seattle
finished with just 5 hits in the victory.

Matt Thornton was credited with his 3rd save. Barry Zito(4-12) absorbed the
loss. The winning ways continue for Seattle. They now have a record of 9-1
in recent days. John Ramsey was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really
been sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two.
That won't get it done.'

WEB GEMS- Top 8th: Kaz Matsui robbed Nick Swisher of a base hit.

One run was the difference at Angels Stadium as the Oakland Athletics defeated
the Los Angeles(AL) Angels 4 to 3.

Oakland promptly took the lead in their half of the first as they scored 2
runs on 4 base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Nick Swisher who
deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he bombed a two-run dinger. Los
Angeles(AL) threatened in the 9th but Oakland was able to put down the rally.

The win was credited to Vin Mazzaro(2-2) who went 5 innings allowing 1 run.
Jeff Fulchino earned his 3rd save. Jason Hammel(4-8) took the loss. He
pitched 5 innings and surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk.

'We won because we did the little things right.' Oakland's manager said after
the game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we
get in close games we don't make mistakes.'
